Little Gourmet onion boxes RGB HRPeri & Sons Farms has added a line of small organic onions to its extensive list of SKUs in the category with the addition of organic white and red pearl onions, as well as organic cippolini onions.

”After 40-plus years growing a wide variety of beautiful big onions, Peri & Sons Farms is excited about adding some gorgeous little onions to the mix,” said Teri Gibson, director of marketing and customer relations for the Yerington, NV-based organization. “These new little organic gourmet onions give customers an even wider variety of options to choose from when filling their onion category needs, making Peri & Sons Farms a one-stop shop for the finest premium and organic onions in every shape and size.”

This is a new item for fall 2020 and as such there is a limited supply between now and the end of December, or until supplies are exhausted. All of the production is certified as sustainably grown and carries the USDA Certified Organic USA #1 designation.

“These little onions are sure to make a big impression in store with our delightfully designed packages that are plastic-free,” said Gibson. “That’s right, no plastic. These beautiful packs are biodegradable and single-stream recyclable, which is an important selling point for consumers who are concerned about plastic packaging and are seeking better Earth-friendly options.”

The no-plastic clamshell packs are biodegradable and recyclable. She said the clear window is a biodegradable cast cellulose. Cellulose is the main component of plant cell walls, and it is what makes the clamshells plant-based and eco-friendly. Peri & Sons is offering an eight-ounce clamshell for the organic red and while pearl onions, while the cippolini onions are sold in a seven-ounce package. Also in this line of small fall products is the company’s organic shallots, available in limited supply. The shallots production began in September and will last through March, or until supplies run out. The organic shallots are being offered in a five-pound bulk carton and a three-count mesh bag.

All four of these items in the onion family are grown on Peri & Sons Farm in Nevada. Gibson said these small gems look great, but they are actually more difficult to grow than full-sized onions. “It’s a little-known fact that small specialty onions require more care, attention and labor than full-size onions,” she said. “That’s because when it comes to pearls and cipollinis, optimum sizing is crucial. Too small and they’re only good for pickling. Too large and they’re considered boilers. To get just the right size, about the width of a 25 cent piece, rows and rows of onions must be carefully monitored. Day-by-day we select and hand-harvest the onions that have grown to the perfect size and have the right shape and texture.”
