The week got off to a hot start Monday at the New England Produce Center in Chelsea, MA, as a tractor-trailer filled with apples caught fire and was consumed by the ensuing blaze.
No one was injured, according to Chelsea fire officials, who said the blaze was reported at around 11 a.m. on Sept. 9.
“It is still under investigation, but highly likely the fire started in the trailer’s refrigeration unit,” Deputy Chief Robert Houghton was quoted as saying. “Workers reported seeing smoke coming from it. It was a small fire, but tough to get at because the apples were on pallets, which were an obstruction.
Houghton said 17 firefighters had the blaze under control in around 20 minutes and prevented it from spreading to the main structure of the center.
