Organic pears and apples experienced growth in the last year, bolstering both categories.
In the past 52 weeks, Superfresh Growers saw organic apples experience a 5 percent national sales growth. Gala led the charge, representing 34 percent of all organic apple sales. Gala was followed by Honeycrisp, Fuji, Granny Smith, and Pink Lady apples. Winter promotions helped organic movement, and the spring and summer had missed opportunities for promotions.
Organic pears fared even better, with a national sales growth of 7 percent. Bartlett was king of organic pears, representing 47.4 percent of all organic pear sales at a whopping $14.8 million. Anjou and Bosc round out the core three organic pear varieties. Combined, these three represent 89.5 percent of all organic pear sales.
New crop apple and pear season will begin in August, beginning with organic Gala apples and organic Bartlett and Starkrimson pears.
