The quality of the oncoming Colorado potato crop is good, according to Art Miller, the owner of Phoenix-based Epic Produce Sales LLC.
Epic is packing and shipping 2018’s Colorado potato storage crop this summer. The new crop “looks about a week to 10 days behind, due to cool weather and a rain delay at planting,” he said.
In mid-July, Epic will supplement its potato supplies with spuds produced in Kansas and Nebraska until the Colorado harvest commences in late August.
The Colorado potato acreage this year “is about the same as a year ago,” he said. “It’s too early for sizing information.”
Miller added that the water table in Colorado is about 150 percent better than a year ago because of a heavy snowpack in the Colorado Rockies.
A new salesman, Derald Rager, joined the firm in June. Rager will be specializing in Epic’s stone fruit, citrus and grape sales, which are new products for the firm.
